…and no 72 virgins for you, loser

The local Muslim community refuses to bury the Normandy priest-killer Adel Karmiche:

Speaking to Le Parisien, Mohammed Karabila, president of the local Muslim cultural association and imam of one of the local mosques, said: ‘We’re not going to taint Islam with this person.

‘We won’t participate in preparing the body or the burial.’

Khalid El Amrani, a Muslim who lives in the town, said that what Kermiche had done ‘was sinful.’

‘He is no longer part of the community,’ he said.

Sooner or later, someone, perhaps somewhere less enlightened than the West, is going to start giving porking dead jihadis, and I don’t mean in the 72 virgins sense.

Back in February, Donald Trump copped flak from the usual quarters for retelling the story of the legendary American General “Black Jack” Pershing suppressing the Muslim revolt in the Philippines early last century:

“[Pershing] caught 50 terrorists who did tremendous damage … and he took the 50 terrorists and he took 50 men and dipped 50 bullets in pig’s blood. You heard about that? He took 50 bullets and dipped them in pig’s blood. And he has his men load up their rifles and he lined up the 50 people and they shot 49 of those people. And the 50th person, he said, you go back to your people and you tell them what happened.”

There is no evidence that this incident ever happened, and there is no evidence that Pershing ever used or ordered such behaviour. While the outraged focussed on Pershing’s (non-)role, they missed a larger point that there is enough evidence that the American Army did use porcine tactics as part of the anti-insurgency campaign. For example, one former American soldier recalled the following to “Time” magazine some thirty years later:

“U.S. soldiers … had a pretty good cure for juramentado [Muslim Moro swordsmen who massacred local Christians] activities. Knowing the horror of the Mohammedan for any contact with swine, and particularly with its blood, these American roughnecks, when they had killed a juramentado, held for him a very public funeral. The body of the defunct bad man having been deposited in the grave, a pig was brought, stuck, its blood sprinkled freely over the D B M, the dead pig thrown in with him, and the burial completed.”

Would it really deter would-be terrorists any more than the Catholic Church’s refusal in times past to give a proper burial to suicides deterred people from committing one? Probably not, but people are starting to lose patience.
