THE POPE AND HIS DIVISIONS – This could become a regular Daily Chrenk feature if it wasn’t so tedious:

Pope Francis has warned in an interview with a German newspaper of the dangers of rising populism in western democracies.

The pope told Die Zeit on Thursday “populism is evil and ends badly as the past century showed.”

Which The Independent considers a “veiled waning about Donald Trump”. Which shows that His Holiness is as clueless about politics and history as The Independent. Apart from being wrong, this whole “Trump is Hitler” thing is now getting very tiresome.

The past century showed that Nazism is evil and ends badly; it certainly did nothing of that sort to populism, and even strictly speaking to fascism (if you consider the Spanish and the Portuguese regimes, for example, to be fascist). Conflating different ideologies and sentiments together, and then subjecting them to an ultimate condemnation is ignorant, intellectually lazy and morally myopic.

I will tell you what else the past century showed: that communism – or non-democratic socialism – is evil. Not holding my breath though for that papal condemnation.
