BARCELONA – ISIS has claimed responsibility for another terrorist attack where a van driven by an Islamist was used to mow down and kill at least a dozen people and injure at least a 100 more at the famous tourist street Las Ramblas in Barcelona.

This means that CNN’s Wolf Blitzer has already piped in with his words of wisdom: “There will be questions if what happened in Barcelona was at all a copycat version of what happened in Charlottesville, Virginia.” My guess is that it’s a copycat version of previous ISIS car attacks in Nice and London (twice) and several other European cities, but thanks for raising the issue, Wolf. As Brendan O’Neill suggested, we should all perhaps punch an Islamist now?

The Barcelona attack is yet another remainder of the absolutist aims of the Islamist ideology. Spain is as far away in Europe as you can get from Syria and Iraq, hasn’t done anything to the former and hasn’t had troops in the latter for over 12 years (following another successful terrorist attack that worked in its objective). You can talk all you want about the root causes and grievances, from poverty to climate change, but the root cause of the Barcelona attack (most likely) is the fact that in the 8th century, Spain was conquered by Muslims and subsequently reconquered by the Christian Spaniards between the 12th and the 15th centuries. According to the Islamists, once you go Caliphate you’ll never go back – and so Spain will not enjoy peace until it comes back under the control of Islam. So yes, I guess once again it’s the fault of our Islamophobia.
