As Goodwin comments, “Social democrats made a gamble that they could target the highly educated middle class and that workers had nowhere else to go. They lost that gamble.”
Gramsci was right: you control the means of cultural production (such as universities) and you will eventually control the state. Combine that with the post-war expansion of higher education, while the ever shrinking working class kept manufacturing things, the left decided their time was better spent manufacturing its new voting class. This is the gamble they most definitely won.
