A JAIL FOR A ONE-STAR REVIEW – A month ago I have written about this outrageous case:

A Lebanese tourist who posted a video on Facebook complaining of sexual harassment and conditions in Egypt has been referred to criminal trial and ordered to be detained for 15 days, Egypt’s public prosecutor said on Sunday.

Mona el-Mazboh has been held since Thursday when she was arrested at Cairo airport at the end of her stay in Egypt after her outspoken video went viral on social media.

In the video, Mazboh complains of being sexually harassed by taxi drivers and young men in the street, as well as poor restaurant service during the holy month of Ramadan and an incident in which money was stolen from her during a previous stay.

Reuters could not reach Mazboh for comment or immediately verify the authenticity of the 10-minute video, in which she calls Egypt a “son of a bitch country”.

Well, the case just got even more outrageous:

An Egyptian court has sentenced a Lebanese woman to eight years in prison over insulting Egyptians in a video she posted online, and set July 29 as the date for her appeal, state media reported.

Mona el-Mazbouh was initially handed down 11 years but the sentence was later reduced to eight, the state-run Al-Ahram news agency reported.

It was unclear why the sentence was reduced. She was also fined 10,700 Egyptian pounds (around $800).

She was charged with “deliberately broadcasting false rumours which aim to undermine society and attack religions.”

Tourism is already half dead in Egypt compared with what it was a decade ago, mostly because of – unfounded – fears over terrorism. Way to revive one of your main export industries, guys. No, you won’t get blown up or kidnapped in Egypt – but we will send you to jail if you don’t like your holiday. Utter insanity.
