Derangement continues

It’s hard not to despair at the state of politics at the moment. Perhaps it has always been this cringeworthy and terrible, but now we have the 24-hour news cycle, internet and social media to rub it into our faces on a constant basis. Perhaps people really are becoming more unhinged. I’m sure my left wing friends could come up with their own selection of examples of the right behaving badly over the past day or two, but you have to forgive me if I focus on what seems to be to be the escalating derangement on the left, not just on the fringes where it’s expected, but now also entering the mainstream.

In Melbourne:

About 200 demonstrators have gathered outside a Melbourne hotel to protest the presence of conservative UK politician Nigel Farage…

The crowd have been organised by the Coalition Against Racism and Fascism (CARF)…

“Nigel Farage you can’t hide we can see your Nazi side” and “Nazis are racist, Muslims are not” are among the chants being yelled.

How on Earth can anyone possibly equate a Brexit activist with a Nazi is completely beyond me. If anyone can enlighten me how advocating that Great Britain leave the European Union is tantamount to fascism, please let me know. Speaking of Nazis…

In Toronto:

Filmmaker Michael Moore compares US President Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler in his provocative new documentary, Fahrenheit 11/9 that has had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival to a sold-out audience.

The documentary, which received a standing ovation, examines the forces Moore believes contributed to Trump’s election victory in November 2016, drawing parallels with the rise of Hitler in 1930s Germany.

At one point, the film superimposes Trump’s words over videos of Hitler’s rallies, as a historian talks about the rise of strong men to positions of power.

Very few things infuriate me more than ignorance of history, which leads to spurious comparisons with whatever present set of circumstances someone doesn’t like. All it really does is trivialise evil and insult the memory of the tens of millions of genuine victims of political persecutions in the last century. I get that you didn’t vote for Trump and find him a terrible president, but let me remind you that two years into his stint as the Reich chancellor, Hitler has banned all political parties save his National Socialists, imprisoned tens of thousands of political enemies and murdered thousands, commenced the persecution of the Jews, abolished democracy, eliminated all non-Party media and closed down every independent institution in the German society, replacing them with Nazi simulacra. If you are seriously arguing that any of these things are about to happen in the United State, you are not just unserious, you are positively insane.

In Washington DC:

New Jersey Democratic Sen. Cory Booker turned a Supreme Court nomination hearing into a starring film role for himself Thursday — bizarrely claiming “this is the closest I’ll get to an ‘I am Spartacus’ moment.”

Booker was claiming he was standing up for the release of classified documents written by nominee Brett Kavanaugh about the use of “racial profiling” at airports in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks.

Booker made a point of saying he was willing to get expelled from the Senate by releasing emails the committee had deemed classified.

Booker fancies himself as a potential Democratic nominee in 2020. But yesterday it was unclear what the Spartacus reference meant in this context, the classified documents he released were actually declassified, and far from putting Kavanaugh in bad light, they showed he was actually against racial profiling. Mind you , Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings have generated even more bizarre moments, with the obligatory Handmaid’s Tale-dressed up protesters, the sharia advocate Linda Sarsour getting ejected from the hearings for her vocal protest against Kavanaugh’s supposed anti-women views (the irony of ironies), and a host of public figures and celebrities going positively apoplectic, including the good old Cher:

Yep, Kavanaugh will take the vote from people of colour. Before or after Trumphitler locks away the whole of CNN and MSNBC in a giant concentration camp?

People are losing their minds. Somebody please help.
