Red stars in their eyes

Irony is still not dead, despite never-ending attempts on its life – Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez continues to slag off capitalism at an event to which tickets cost between US$1325 and $1650:

U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez slammed political moderates at the South by Southwest Conference & Festivals in Austin, Texas, calling their views “misplaced” as she defended her progressive politics in a room full of supporters…

The self-declared Democratic socialist also criticized the treatment of minorities throughout American history, from Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s New Deal, which she claimed was racist, to Ronald Reagan’s policies, which she said “pitted” white working class people against minorities in order “to screw over all working-class Americans,” particularly African-Americans and Hispanics…

Other topics Ocasio-Cortez discussed included the Green New Deal and capitalism, which she said could not be redeemed because it puts profit “above everything else.”

“The most important thing is the concentration of capital, and it means that we prioritize profit and the accumulation of money above all else, and we seek it at any human and environmental cost… But when we talk about ideas like democratic socialism, it means putting democracy and society first, instead of capital first; it doesn’t mean that the actual concept of capitalistic society should be abolished,” she said.

Whatever that actually means.

And whatever that actually means, young people in particular (as I have noted many times including recently) heartily agree:

Generation Z has a more positive view of the word “socialism” than previous generations, and — along with millennials — are more likely to embrace socialistic policies and principles than past generations, according to a new Harris Poll given exclusively to Axios.

Yes, half of the youngsters (up to 30-something) want to live in a socialist country.

Just to further underline the generational ignorance, spare a thought for the age brackets 18-24 and 25-34, where – in contrast to the older demographics – there is a significant overlap, i.e. there are people who have positive reaction to both socialism and communism. Dear Ys and Zs, this is not like ice cream flavours; you can’t like both vanilla and strawberry.

This is also fascinating:

The top three voting issues for Gen Z, according to the Harris poll, are mass shootings, racial equality, and immigration policy and treatment of immigrants.

Millennials’ top issues are access to health care, global warming/climate change and mass shootings.

Gen X’s top issues are: access to health care, terrorism/national security and the national debt — the same top issues for boomers and older.

As Mark Steyn wrote in the introduction to his “The (Un)documented Mark Steyn” collection, ” Liberals expend tremendous effort changing the culture. Conservatives expend tremendous effort changing elected officials every other November – and then are surprised that it doesn’t make much difference. Culture trumps politics – which is why, once the question’s been settled culturally, conservatives are reduced to playing catch-ups, twisting themselves into pretzels to explain why gay marriage is really conservative after all, or why thirty million unskilled immigrants with a majority of births out of wedlock are ‘natural allies’ of the Republican Party.”

The polling results like those above are the result of the left having successfully claimed the commanding heights of cultural and moral production, from the education system to popular culture – and using them well to both dumb down and indoctrinate their young charges and consumers. Generations Y and Z either have no idea what socialism actually means, except that they associate it with something nice and cuddly, or if they do have some insight, have neither the sufficient historical nor economic knowledge to work out that this is something that regardless how nice it sounds in theory doesn’t actually work in practice and indeed has never worked any time it has been tried in the past.

No wonder many would like to see the voting age lowered to 16. Why not 10? Give the ballots to the 15-year old Asperger wannabe totalitarian from Sweden, Greta Thunberg, with her “school strike for climate”, and we’ll all be able to live in socialism much sooner. In the words of the non-Millennial mayor of New York

Just you wait to discover how little money there will be once it gets into the “right” hands.
