Should all the caught illegal migrants be sent to the self-proclaimed “sanctuary cities”?
There is a lot of both mirth and outrage in the United States at President Trump’s latest suggestion:
Frustrated by rising numbers of undocumented immigrants arriving at the southern border and a failure to get Congress to fully fund a U.S.-Mexico border wall, Trump taunted Democrats by dangling the possibility of an influx of illegal immigrants into their communities.
“Due to the fact that Democrats are unwilling to change our very dangerous immigration laws, we are indeed, as reported, giving strong considerations to placing Illegal Immigrants in Sanctuary Cities only,” Trump wrote on Twitter.
Democrats were offended at the cynical politics underlying the threat – for example Nancy Pelosi: “Using human beings — including little children — as pawns in their warped game to perpetuate fear and demonize immigrants is despicable.” CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin told Anderson Cooper that using humans as “pestilence to spread around the country” is grotesque, though arguably not as grotesque as a progressive comparing illegal immigrants to a disease.
Republicans on the other hand were amused because for every Rahm Emmanuel (“We would welcome these migrants with open arms, just as we welcomed Syrian refugees, just as we welcomed Puerto Ricans displaced by Hurricane Maria and just as we welcome Rohingya refugees fleeing genocide in Myanmar.”) there was a Cory Booker, saying that Trump is “trying to pit Americans against each other and make us less safe” and is “injecting fear into our country”. In other words, there has been plenty of hypocrisy from the people who self-avowedly heart illegal migrants, just Not (too many) In My Back Yard.
Of course, it’s likely that everyone’s bluffing while calling the other’s bluff. That is nothing will happen and everyone knows it.
Then there is this argument:
An idea floated by President Donald Trump to send immigrants from the border to “sanctuary cities” to exact revenge on Democratic foes could end up doing the migrants a favor by placing them in locations that make it easier to put down roots and stay in the country.
The plan would put thousands of immigrants in cities that are not only welcoming to them, but also more likely to rebuff federal officials carrying out deportation orders. Many of these locations have more resources to help immigrants make their legal cases to stay in the United States than smaller cities, with some of the nation’s biggest immigration advocacy groups based in places like San Francisco, New York City and Chicago. The downside for the immigrants would be a high cost of living in the cities.
Which would make Trump’s trolling of the open border Democrats self-defeating.
In an ideal world, the illegal migrants shouldn’t be sent to sanctuary cities because they shouldn’t be in the United States at all, once intercepted by the immigration authorities. And even if the Democrats won’t be able to make them all stay legally, they will do their darnest to make many of them vote. This remains the main reason why the left loves immigrants – they do the jobs that Americans won’t do, at least not in sufficient numbers, such as voting Democrat.
Objectively, it’s a splendid idea that the advocates of a policy should be required to put their money where their mouth is – the progressive urban enclaves should not only host the unlimited numbers of immigrants they are so keen on, they should also have to do with the clean green renewable energy they advocate so passionately, at least as much – or as little – of it as the wind and the solar can currently provide. Alas, this will never happen in real life, so the virtue signalers are free to virtue signal without any consequences. And while calling out their hypocrisy can be fun, it also misunderstands their philosophical approach: it is the very nature of collectivism that its proponents want someone else or at least everyone to bear the burden of their policies. The argument “you like unrestricted immigration? then have your unrestricted immigration” is as futile as “you like high taxes? there’s nothing stopping you from paying more”. The left is not about choice or voluntarism but about compulsion and coercion; about forcing everyone to be as supposedly virtuous as they are.
And so the fiddling continues as the border burns.
