Distract yourself from COVID 24/7 and enjoy some wisdom of the ages from all corners of the world. Coincidentally, when proverbs and folk sayings were coming into being, life really used to be nasty, brutish and short for most people, with the average life expectancy prior to the 19th century of only 25-30 years regardless of specific location around the globe. Overwhelmingly this was because of the prevalence of disease, including pandemics, and no effective medical treatments. As we face the latest virus to cause havoc in our history, we should be thankful that we at least understand the challenge, can manage it in a scientific way, and hopefully will soon be able to benefit from a cure and/or a vaccine. Whether any new proverbs will be born from the age of Coronavirus remains to be seen, so for now here are some oldies and goodies:
